Alfred Elmer Bahls, age 85, of Guttenberg, IA, died Friday, July 24, 2015, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA. He was born on March 31, 1930 in the Volga Township in Clayton County Iowa to Albert and Bertha (Berhens) Bahls. Alfred received his education from the Guttenberg School system where he graduated with the class of 1948. Days after graduation, Alfred entered the U.S. Navy where he served his country during Korean War and was honorably discharged on May 2, 1952. Five months later, Alfred was united in marriage with Darlene Schroeder on October 14, 1952, at St Johns Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. The vows they exchanged later blessed them with three children. Alfred provided Barber Services for many, many people in the Guttenberg area for over 52 years. Alfred was a member of the Guttenberg Fire Department, St. Johns Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Alfred also enjoyed spending time fishing, visiting with his clients and spending time with his family. Those left to cherish Alfreds memory are his three children. Steve (Sue) Bahls, Darla (Dan) Brodigan and Rhonda (Duane) Jasper; 8 grandchildren, Aaron (Mary) Bahls, Slade (Christina) Bahls, Katherine Jasper, Elizabeth Jasper, Jessica Jasper, Brian Jasper, Patrick Brodigan and Kate Brodigan; 3 great grandchildren, Eva, Claire and Ethan Bahls. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, Laura Glawe and Marie Putzier; three brothers, Alvin, Eldo and Mike Bahls.
