Alice Downing

Obituary Alice Clara Wilamina Siebrecht Downing was born to Otto and Augusta (Schafermeier) Siebrecht April 24, 1916 on the family farm south of Garnavillo. She died April 6, 2020 at Greenwood Village, Colorado. Alice was baptized and confirmed at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. She attended Eagle District Country School through 8th Grade and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1934. Following graduation she attended Iowa State Teachers College and earned a Teachers Certificate. She then taught at Eagle District Country School. Alice married Harold (Jake) L. Downing on June 26, 1940. They had three children, Harold (Butch), Sandra and Brian. Following her husbands death in 1961, the family relocated to Aurora, Colorado where Jake had previously been stationed with the U. S. Army. Alice was a loving mother, loyal wife, and good friend. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, bowling, cooking (especially pork chops), having dinner with friends, attending church and visiting with the minister. She loved to travel and her favorite trips were to Germany and Australia. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother (Valmah), husband, son, (Brian) and son-in-law Bill Britton. She is survived by children Harold (Sandra) Downing of Oklahoma, daughter Sandra Britton of Englewood, Colorado, daughter-in-law, Jennifer Downing of Mount Laurel, New Jersey and grandchildren Harold Jr. (Bud) Downing, John (Patsy Selman) Downing, Brian Britton, Ashley Beals, Travis (Kelly) Downing and Blake (Georgia Conover) Downing, sister (Naomi Klinge of Garnavillo), five great grandchildren, Kylie, Bryce, Taylor, Jadyn, Ava and several nieces and nephews.
