Survivors include 2 daughters: Doris (Roger) Childs of San Mateo, California and Phyllis Landis of Marion, IA; and one son, Dean (Barb) Hayen of Scotch Grove, IA; 9 grandchildren: Carol, Diane, Dean (Tulin), and David (Stephanie) Childs, Keri (Jim) Gales, Mike (Judy) Hayen, Christine (Gary) Hibberd, Deborah (Rob) Edgeton, Cheryl (Chris) Kulish; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Elmer (Helen) Hanken of Monticello; 1 sister-in-law, Elsa Hanken of Langworthy; 1 brother-in-law, Donald Pursell of Monticello. Berniece was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Henry in 1981; 1 sister, Emma Pursell; 3 brothers: Gerke, William and Edward Hanken; 1 son-in-law, Ronald Landis. Berniece was born on August 4, 1912, in Langworthy, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Anna (Bohlken) Hanken. She was educated in Wayne Township and was confirmed at St. John?s Lutheran Church in 1927. Berniece married Henry Hayen on May 2, 1934, at St. John?s Lutheran Church in rural Monticello and they began a farming vocation in Wayne Township that lasted their entire married lives. She enjoyed gardening, family, friends and neighbors.
