Anna Marie Olinger

Obituary Anna Marie Leliefeld Olinger of Guttenberg, IA passed away peacefully at the age of 100 at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital on November 1, 2020. Ann was born on July 13, 1920, to Andrew & Philomena (Endres) Scheller in Millville, IA. She received her education at the country school and then at the Catholic School in Luxemburg where she would walk 5 miles to get there before 8 AM Mass. During inclement weather she often stayed with the nuns. In 1945 Ann met her husband Cyril Leliefeld while he was in the Army. They were married on July 16, 1947 and together they had 3 daughters. Her solid work ethic started with working on her home farm and continued throughout her years in Guttenberg where she and Lilly ran a gas station for 4 years. She then chose to take care of her bed-ridden mother until her passing in 1960, something she took great pride in. Ann then took on several jobs including cleaning house for the priests at St. Marys, working at Muters, detailing cars for Dave Brown and lastly was a custodial engineer at the Guttenberg Schools. She retired in 1982 during which time she took care of her husband until his passing in 1985. In August 1988, Ann met her second husband Byron Olinger and they were married April 20, 1990. He passed away March 2, 2007. Ann was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters of America, St. Marys Quilting group and had a special connection to St. Marys Prayer Group. Ann had a knack for baking bread and making apple & elderberry jelly which she often shared with many of her friends & family. Ann especially enjoyed playing cards, particularly pinochle with her Thursday group of friends. If there was a card game to be played Ann was in. Even if it was with her great grandkids playing a made up game that didnt make sense. She spent many nights playing cards with her friends at River Living Center where she lived. Anns grandchildren & great grandchildren brought her much joy and happiness. Her guidance (whether sought after or not) was always spoken out of love and let her strong faith shine through. When asked what the key was to living to be 100 years old Ann replied with a chuckle, "Drink good whiskey."
