Survivors include his wife, Kay, 2 sons, Steve (Cherrie) and Terry (Sherry) both of Dyersville, a daughter Jan (Mark) Krapfl of Cedar Rapids; 6 granchildren, Travis, Justin, and Robbie Thier, Kelly, Morgan, and Olivia Krapfl; 2 step grandchildren, Angela (Tim) English and Jennifer (Pat) Hogrefe; 3 step great grandchildren, Claire and Bennett English and Ashton Hogrefe; a brother Joe (Dolores) Thier of Farley; 2 sisters-in-law, Kay Thier and Marie Thier; a brother-in-law, Francis Stoffel and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Austin Krapfl, 2 brothers, Arthur and James Thier, a sister Germaine Mescher, a brother-in-law, Bill Mescher and a sister-in-law, Patricia Stoffel. Gus was born on January 2, 1925 in Dyersville, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Anna (Claus) Thier Sr. He graduated from Xavier High School and attended Loras College. Gus married Kay Schemmel on August 25, 1949 in Farley, Iowa. Together they farmed until his retirement in 1982 when they moved to town. Gus enjoyed driving and hauling dog crates all over the U.S. for G & T Crates, a company he co-owned with his son, Terry. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus council 1734.
