Daniel James Jacobs, 61, of Hermosa Beach, California, formerly of Guttenberg, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 of natural causes.


A private burial will be held at Guttenberg City Cemetery by Dan’s family.


Dan was born August 17, 1961 in Guttenberg to Jim and Carol Jacobs. He graduated from Guttenberg High School in 1979. Dan proudly served in the US Marine Corps from 1981 to 1985, where he was awarded “Expert Markmanship” status, and received an honorable discharge. Following his Marine Corps service, he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in computer science from Arizona State University. Dan went on to a lengthy career as a computer and software engineer. He worked in the fields of aviation and aeronautical applications and testing, working for companies in Washington state, Florida, and many others in between. Dan also enjoyed traveling the world, both as a US Marine and in civilian life. Dan’s travels included several nations in South America and Southeast Asia. Dan also enjoyed deer hunting in the Guttenberg area and elk and antelope hunting in Northern Arizona.


He is survived by his siblings: Jeffrey Jacobs of Washington, DC; Douglas Jacobs of Miami, Florida; Sue Jacobs of Elkader; and Sally (Seth) Gilkes of Robins, Iowa.


Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Carol Jacobs of Guttenberg; his paternal grandparents, Walt and Lottie Jacobs of Guttenberg; and maternal grandparents, Jack and Violet Schenke of Colesburg.
