PETERSBURG, IOWA




Daniel J. Wessels, 88 of Petersburg passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque.




Visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a military service will commence at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at Kramer Funeral Home from 9 – 10:30 a.m. prior to funeral mass.




Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg, Iowa with burial in the church cemetery where military honors will be accorded. Rev. Chris Podhajsky will officiate.




Dan was born on May 13, 1935, in Petersburg, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Clara (Krapfl) Wessels. Dan was born on the same farm he would farm for much of his life. He served in the US Army from 1955 – 1957. He married Elaine Schneider on May 10, 1958, in Holy Cross, Iowa.




Dan loved sports, watching, playing, and coaching for many years. He especially enjoyed golfing and assisted in the development of Lone Pine Golf Country Club. Dan and Elaine traveled to all 50 states, golfing, fishing, and camping in many of them. He cherished many memories with his family, especially attending any sporting events of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.




Dan had a deep appreciation for the land and he passed his love of the farm on to his children and their families. Dan was an avid golfer and fisherman and he had many lifelong friends. Dan's greatest love was that of family. He especially cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His family brought him much joy.




Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Elaine; children: Ann DeLaney, Karen (John) Gleeson, Laurie Wessels, Steve (Jennifer) Wessels, Greg Wessels, Sarah (Michael) Brodkorb; grandchildren: Caitlin (Alex) Cecchini, Gregory (Fiance, Megan) DeLaney, Kevin (Madi) DeLaney, Audrey (Cade) Chace, Kristen (Derek) Emerson, Alex Gleeson, Lauren, and Jack Wessels, Abby, Ellie, and Benjamin; great grandchildren: Gabe, Clare, and Zach Cecchini, Maya and Landon Chace, Cora, Eli, Quinlyn, and Wyatt Emerson; in-laws, Lee Ann Wessels.




He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, son-in-law, Paul DeLaney; siblings: Celestine (Joe) Boeckenstedt, LaVern (Nettie) Wessels, Charles (Helen) Wessels, Lois (Paul) Pins, Jean (Lee) Mensen and Fred Wessels; brother-in-laws, Mark Schneider, Ed Spiel, and Ted Klein.




In lieu of flowers, memorials may be addressed to Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 104 3rd St SW, Dyersville, IA 52040.




The family would like to thank the 3rd floor medical staff at MercyOne Hospital in Dubuque.
