David Chappell

David A. Chappell, 72, of Monticello died Monday, August 4, 2014, at home surrounded by his family after a brief illness. Private services were held at the Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello and he was interred at Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello. David was born on August 21, 1941, in Volga, Iowa, the son of Glenn and Jewell (Hulverson) Chappell. He graduated from Strawberry Point High School with the Class of 1959. He then enlisted in the US Air Force in 1960 and made a career in communications. He retired from the USAF in 1980 as a Master Sergeant. He worked at the Iowa State Men's Reformatory in Anamosa as a corrections officer from 1980 until his retirement in 1997. He married Bonnie J. Bonjour on October 18, 1960, at an Air Force Base in Texas. She returned to Monticello in 1972 to raise their family as David continued his military career. The couple raised their family, and spent time with their grandchildren. David and Bonnie volunteered countless hours making quilts and other items for the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. He also enjoyed playing cards and bingo, going to the casino, hunting, fishing and woodworking. His collections included coins, matchbooks and decorative plates. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; 4 children: Todd (Vickie) Chappell, Lauri Chappell, Tracy Chappell, LuAnne (Chappell) Schneider, all of Monticello; 7 grandchildren: Jamie and Sierra Chappell, Jenna (Jones) Reynolds, Cassidy Chappell-Covington, Allison Chappell, Jud and Tyler Schneider; 4 great grandsons: Elliot, Ethan, and Oliver Reynolds, and Jaxson Chappell; his mother, Jewell Chappell of Guttenberg; 2 siblings: Janice (Paul Duane) Schmidt of Fridley, MN, Nancy (Larry) Ormston of Elgin, IA; In-Laws: Jerry (Ann) Jones of Rudd, IA, Doug (Pat) Bonjour of Monticello, Gloria (Mike) Hammonds of Davenport, IA, Garry (Willene) Kromminga of Robins, IA, Belva (Ron) Lund of Hill City, MN, and Brenda (Bill) Crowley of Anamosa, IA. He is preceded in death by his father, parents-in-law: Orville and Shirley (Moser) Bonjour, an infant brother, James; a sister, Beverly (Chappell) Jones; a brother-in-law, Virgil Bonjour; a sister-in-law, Betty (Bonjour) Kromminga; a niece, LeeAnna Lund; and a son-in-law, Ray Schneider.
