Dixie Mae Zehr

Dixie Mae Zehr, 85, died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at the home of her daughter, Pat, in Iowa City. Dixie was born on February 14, 1932 to Dan and Rachel Coffman of Garnavillo, Iowa. She graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1949. She was valedictorian of her class. She graduated from Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota in 1952. She worked as a RN at Guttenberg Hospital, and with her husband, Dr. Earl Zehr in Clarinda, Iowa. Dixie married Tony Berns in 1952, and 3 children were born from this union. They divorced. She married Earl Zehr in August, 1963. Dixie enjoyed flying as a private pilot, fishing in Minnesota, and traveling, including a trip to Australia and several Alaskan cruises. She completed her bucket list by seeing Willie Nelson in concert. She enjoyed visiting with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren across the United States. She was known as grandma great. Dixie is survived by her children Anne Bross (Bill) of Point Blank, Texas, Pat Kriz (Tom) of Iowa City, Dan Berns (Merry) of Guttenberg. Step children Rick Zehr (Pam) of Iowa City, Terri Zehr of Iowa City, John Zehr (Bene) of Des Moines, and 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Dixie was preceded in death by her husband Earl, her parents Dan and Rachel Coffman, brother Dan Coffman, and step daughter Kathy Anderson.
