Elizabeth Overbeck Walke

Elizabeth Overbeck Walke, age 80, of Guttenberg, died Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born the daughter of Ed and Mary (Helle) Nieland on July 18, 1926 in Petersburg IA. Betty grew up in the Guttenberg area and graduated from St. Marys Catholic School. She later received her degree in nursing and was a registered nurse for 50 years. The Guttenberg nurse helped open Riverview Hospital with Dr. Goddard in 1947. That same year she was united in marriage with Verni Overbeck at St. Marys Catholic Church in Guttenberg on November 25. She spent many years answering emergency calls and bringing babies into the world at the Municipal Hospital. She then graduated to a unique volunteer role in the late 80s. Her job involved chairing the Guttenberg Care Center Resident Advocate Committee. In 1982, she was united in marriage with Herman Walke. Betty was a member of the Happy Homemakers, St. Annes Society, St. Marys Choir, American Legion Auxiliary, Firemans Auxiliary and the St. Marys Quilters. She was the director of nurses at the Guttenberg Care Center and enjoyed reading, playing cards, dancing, playing slots and the casino and using her great talent for quilting. Betty will be remembered by her five children, Joyce (Steve) Voss of Guttenberg, Carl (Sue) Overbeck of Arizona, Bill (Janet) Overbeck of Hanover Kansas, Bob (Sherry) Overbeck of Arizona and Mary (Ross) Abbott of Guttenberg; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; one sister Germaine Weyant of Guttenberg and one brother Joseph Nieland of Oelwein. She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents; one sister Agnes and two brothers Cletus and JackVisitation: Monday 4:00 - 8:00 P.M.
