Survivors include his children: Dennis of Petersburg, Ken of Decatur, IN, Carol (Mark) Brown of Colesburg, Lori (Jan) Keck of Greeley, IA, Bill (Susanne) of Manchester, Helen Backes of Elkader, Nancy (Daniel) Schroeder of Guttenberg, Bonnie West of Maynard, 24 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, a sister, Ardella (Bernard) Schlichte of Colesburg, brother and sisters-in-law: Bob (Betty) Jaeger of St. Catherine, Marita (Eldon) Kregel of Monona, Ray Jaeger of Armarillo, TX, Roland Jaeger of South Carolina, Norma Engelken of Dyersville, Frances Jaeger of Dubuque and Eileen Jaeger of Guttenberg. He as preceded in death by his wife Evelyn in 1978, a grandson, Brian Scherbring, brothers and sisters-in-law: George, Don and Joe Jaeger, Lorraine Wolter, Dorothy Cole. Elmer was born on June 26, 1925 in Petersburg, Iowa, the son of Herman and Mary (Fortman) Scherbring. He served in the US Army from 1951-1953 in Korea. Elmer married Evelyn V. Jaeger on January 28, 1956 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, Iowa. Together they farmed near Petersburg where they raised their 8 children. He also delivered the Eastern Iowa Shopper and worked for the lunch service at West Delaware Schools. Elmer was a lifetime member of the Edward W. Lake VFW Post 7736 and a lifelong member of the Ss. Peter & Paul Church. He enjoyed visiting family, traveling, fishing, polka music, dancing, bowling and the Chicago White Sox. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday, October 6, 2008, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where the VFW Post 7736 will gather at 6 p.m. and a parish scripture service will be held at 7 p.m.
