Eugene Gustav Kraus was born November 10, 1923, in Garnavillo Township, Clayton County, Iowa, to August and Irene (Herchert) Kraus. He was baptized in the St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church of Garnavillo, Iowa, on December 9, 1923, by the Rev. K. Wm. Braun. He was confirmed in the faith and church of his baptism on April 10, 1938, by the Rev. M. J. Harder. He remained an active member of this congregation for all of his life and received the Lords Supper for the last time on the morning of his passing. Eugene was united in marriage with Ivanelle Anna Marie Backes on September 19, 1951, by the Rev. E. W. Kramer in St. Johns Lutheran Church of Guttenberg, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed by the births of three children: Linda, LuAnn, and Rollyn. After completing the 8th grade in the Clayton County Country School System, Eugene went to work farming for his father. From 1945 to 1946 he served his country in the US Army during World War II in the European Theater Occupation Force in Germany as a T-4 Sergeant. With his wife he owned and operated a farm between Clayton Center and Garnavillo where they raised their family. He later worked for Rhomberg Implement, Fred Carlson Construction, and was a school bus driver for over 16 years for the Garnavillo Community Schools. He and his wife moved from the farm to Garnavillo in November, 1980. Eugene served his church as a council member and in the Brotherhood. He was a member of the Clay-Gar American Legion Post #723 and served as post commander. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, World War II history, and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed, with his wife, being Sr. King and Queen in the 2015 Garnavillo July 4th Parade. After a short illness, he was called by his heavenly Father from his earthly home in Garnavillo to his eternal home on Monday, September 7, 2015.
