Eugene “Gene” F. Olberding, 79, of Dyersville, Iowa died Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2016, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville where a parish vigil service will be held at 3:00 p.m. a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:00 p.m. and a American Legion Post 137 service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016, St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, Iowa with burial in the church cemetery with military honors accorded by the American Legion Post #137. Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate. Gene was born December 29, 1936 on the family farm in Delaware County, the son of Andrew and Agnes (Kramer) Olberding. In 1956 Gene enlisted in the United States Army. He married Darlene Baumler-Schirmer on June 3, 1972 at St Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville. Gene worked construction, building many of the local farm buildings including round rafter barns. In his later years he drove semi and enjoyed working in his wood shop. He liked doing puzzles, playing cards and most of all spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Darlene, 6 children: Amy (special friend Jacob Pape) of Dyersville, Jason (Christy) Olberding of Marion, Lauri (Jeremy) Latteyer of Robins, Steve (Sarah) Schirmer of Balltown, Linda (Pat) Prusha of Nevada, Chris (Selene) Schirmer of Calmar, 12 grandchildren: Avery and Isaac Olberding, Alex, Emily and Amber Latteyer, Colin and Kyle Schirmer, Dillon and Marcus Prusha, Selena, Mackenzie and Tonya Schirmer, siblings: Jim (Katie) Olberding of Dyersville, Grace (Don) Hermsen of Luxemburg, in-laws: Shirley Olberding of Dyersville, Bill Baumler, Dale (Mick) Baumler, Dennis (Pat) Baumler, Irene (Don) Lynch, Daniel Baumler, Glen Baumler, Jay (Renee) Baumler, Leon (Gail) Baumler, Ann (Dean) Schaufenbuel, John (Anjie) Baumler, Terry (Carl) Schmitt, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sarah Olberding siblings: Dick (Alice) Olberding, George Olberding, parents-in-laws, Raymond and Theresa Baumler, sisters-in-laws, Shirley Baumler and Nancy Havel.
