MONTICELLO, IOWA George H. Nieters, 93, of Monticello died Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, at Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A visitation will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello where a memorial service will commence at 11. Inurnment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello. George was born Dec. 13, 1921, in St. Louis, MO, the son of George H. and Josephine (Abeln) Nieters. He attended Baden Grade School and graduated from Beaumont High School. He worked for the St. Louis Screw and Bolt Co. and International Shoe Co. while he was in St. Louis. He played professional baseball for the Cubs AAA farm team and entered WWII in 1942/43 as a member of the Army Air Corps, flying over thirty missions. He moved to Anamosa in 1948, working for Cuckler and Commander Buildings, and moved to Monticello in 1951. George was a huge fan of baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, and golf. He loved the game beyond the prize! George is survived by a daughter-in-law, Linda Nieters of Muscatine; grandchildren, Stacey Ficklin and Amanda Leopard; great grandchildren: Bethany O’Brien-Nieters, Landon Cavazos and Karen Ficklin; great great granddaughter, Brynnlee Danielle Klerk De Reus; special friends: Pete Sauser and Dave Morgan, both of Monticello, and many friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bette; 2 sons, Daniel and Jon Nieters, and a daughter, Karen David, a brother, Oliver Nieters, and a sister, Mary Muir. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Camp Courageous of Iowa (www.campcourageous.org) or the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight (www.eihonorflight.org).
