Gerald Louis Meyer was born on June 30, 1913 at the family home in Garnavillo Township to Theodore and Lizzie (Meyer) Meyer. He passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at the Guttenberg Care Center. Gerald graduated from the Garnavillo High School in 1931. He attended Iowa State University during the winters of 1932-33 and 1933-34. On June 30, 1938 he was united in marriage with Florence Allyn on the Allyn family home farm. This marriage lasted 63 years until Florences death in 2002. Gerald worked hard on the Meyer farm that his grandfather from Germany had purchased. He was very proud of his herd of registered Milking Shorthorns. Gerald was always on the forefront of conservation practices and had the first Tree Farm in the state of Iowa. The timber was dedicated on May 30, 1955 by then Governor Leo Hoegh. Gerald had a zest for life and living. He had a beautiful bass voice and sang in quartets at various times in his life. He loved to fish and was more than patient with his three children who couldnt sit still in a boat. He also enjoyed hunting and playing cards with friends. Gerald and Florence enjoyed traveling and had visited every state of the U.S. and every province in Canada. Gerald believed in service to God and the community and was always willing to give of his time and resources. He was a lifetime member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Garnavillo. Through the years Gerald held various office positions on the church council and Lutheran brotherhood. He was a member of the Garnavillo School Board for ten years. Gerald also enjoyed his ten years of service as the school crossing guard. This kind and gentle soul will be greatly missed by his children; Carol Groth of Garnavillo, Marleen Oxenreider of Chariton, and Jerry (Diane) Meyer of Ames; seven grandchildren , Bradley (Rhonda) Groth, Brenda Groth, Kari (Mark) Bolding, Kati Oxenreider, David (Carrie) Oxenreider, Matthew and Nathan Meyer; seven great grandchildren, Josiah Groth, Kim Bradford, Christian, Corinne, Dayne and Kylee Bolding and Carson Oxenreider. Carson will get a sibling in October. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Florence, his sister Myrene and his son-in- law, Gene Oxenreider.Visitation: Saturday 4:00 - 7:00 P.M.
