Harlan Albert Backes was born the son of Albert and Amanda (Rodenberg) Backes, September 29, 1933, on the family farm near Garber. He died Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. Harlan received his education from the Volga Country School; served his country in the United States Army, during the Korean Conflict; farmed with his family; drove escort; and worked for the Livingston and Nelson Lumber Companies. He was a member of the North East Iowa Antique Assoc.; Guttenberg American Legion Post 373; and served on the St. John's Lutheran Church Council. He enjoyed fishing; dancing and visiting with family and friends. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Myrna; three sons, Randy (Karen) Backes, Robert (Helen) Backes, and Roger (Dianna) Backes all of Guttenberg; one sister, Ivanelle (Eugene) Kraus of Garnavillo; ten grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister and brother-in-law, Verona and Lester Borcherding.Visitation: 5:00-8:00 P.M.
