Harlan Louis Zittergruen, 88, of Garnavillo, passed on to Eternal Life on Monday, July 21, 2008. Harlan was born on a farm near Garber on September 15, 1919 to Louis and Elsie (Kruse) Zittergruen and was one of 8 children. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport and graduated from Elkport High School in 1937. Harlan served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947 as a Military Policeman/Interpreter in Germany, France, and Holland. He married Dorothy Mueller at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Farmersburg on May 7, 1947, and the couple initially farmed near Garber. The family moved to Garnavillo in 1954 after purchasing the IGA grocery store which became their family business for 23 years. Following the sale of the grocery business, Harlan worked for the Garnavillo Schools for nine years. After retiring, Harlan worked with Dorothy at the Kountry Manor for ten years. Harlan was an active member of St. Peters Lutheran Church. He also was a member of American Legion since 1947. Harlan was very proud of his sons and their families and enjoyed spending time with them. In addition to his family, he loved to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. Harlan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Mae Zittergruen; five sons, Brian (Linda) of Muskego, Wis., John (Bonnie) Zittergruen of West Des Moines, Gary (Jenny) Zittergruen of Van Horne, Mark (Maureen) Zittergruen of Cedar Rapids, David (Nancy) Zittergruen of Chaska, Minn. Harlan was also the proud grandfather of sixteen grandchildren; sister, Elaine Schroeder of Guttenberg; brother Marvin Zittergruen of Monona; sister in law-AnnaBelle Zittergruen of Elkader; one brother in law-Butch Rommann of Guttenberg. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 siblings and two infant grandchildren.Visitation: Thursday 4:00 - 7:00 P.M.
