Obituary Harlan Clifton Meyer, age 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Tuesday, January 18, 2022. He was born the youngest of three children from Clarence and Parthenia (Moser) Meyer on April 24, 1942 on the family farm near Osterdock. Harlan attended the Mound Country School in the rural Osterdock area until finishing his education at Guttenberg Community Schools graduating in 1960. Harlan was united in marriage to Shirley (Clinton) Meyer on January 24, 1964 at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport. Harlan farmed his entire life on the Meyer Family Farm. He served on the Guttenberg Community School Board from 1986-1998 and helped prepare the merger into Clayton Ridge Schools. He represented local dairy farmers at Associated Milk Producers Inc. for over 40 years. Always loving to farm in an International Harvester tractor while listening to polka and country & western music, Harlan was known for teaching respect, hard work, the art of negotiation, and a grounded meaning of success. Every farmhand also remembers the executive meetings around the 7 Up cooler in the shop after a hard day's work. Harlan in his prime loved to be a host and entertainer where he made everyone laugh with jokes and stories over checkers or a card game. While he almost always drank Schmidt beer, many new family and friends remember how he would greet them and calm their nerves with liquid courage. Harlan liked to take his family on several vacations in lulls of the growing season to visit extended family in Colorado, Minnesota, Washington, and North Dakota. He also loved when he visited Europe and every time his grandchildren visited him. Harlan's life will forever be cherished by his wife of 57 years Shirley, his children Jim (Heather) Meyer of Osterdock, Philip (Cate) Meyer of Pelham New Hampshire, and JoLynn (Jason) Miller of Walford; his six grandchildren Breanna, Madison, and Nicholas Meyer and Jayden, Jaylee, and Jamison Miller; sisters in law Lola and Gertie Meyer; brothers in law DeVere (Ellen) Clinton, Dennis (Rhonda) Clinton, Roland (Marguerite) Clinton, Sheldon (BJ) Clinton & many other family and friends. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Parthenia (Moser) Meyer; brothers Ron and Curt Meyer; his father in law Vernon Clinton and mother in law Ruth Moellers; brother in law Nyal Clinton; and nephews Jeff Clinton and Mark Meyer. The family would like to thank Elkader Care Center for their care and kindness given to Harlan. In lieu of flowers and all other styles of sympathy, the family requests memorials to benefit any of the following organizations: Bethel Cemetery, Dollars for Scholars Guttenberg or the St. Johns Lutheran Church Organ Fund in Guttenberg.
