Surviving are his wife, Joy, 3 sons: John (Michelle) Engelbrecht of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Dan (Sue) Engelbrecht of Dyersville, Iowa and David Engelbrecht of Orlando, Florida, and 3 grandchildren: Hans, Marta and Ellie Engelbrecht. Harlen was born May 26, 1920, in Marcus Iowa the son of George and Melinda (Frick) Engelbrecht. He attended Country School and graduated from Hartley High. He earned his Doctorate in Veterinary Science from Iowa State University in 1944. At ISU he met Angela Joy Schallaire and they were married October 29th in Oak Park, Ill. Harlen was in the Army Specialized Training Program while attending ISU. He practiced Veterinary Medicine in Lake Park, Iowa for 3 years. He went to Fort Dodge Labratories working in Diagnostic and Research Development from 1948 until retirement in 1985. One of his greatest accomplishments was developing the Swine Jowl Vaccine. Harlen and Joy moved to Dyersville in 2002. Harlen Engelbrecht, 88, of Dyersville and formerly of Fort Dodge, Iowa died Sunday, September 14, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Dyersville after a brief illness. Friends may call from 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a service of remembrance, conducted by Nancy Lange, will commence at 8 p.m. Friends may continue to call from Noon - 2 p.m. Thursday, September 18, 2008 at Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Fort Dodge where there funeral service will commence at 2 p.m. Rev. Jim Meadows will officiate. Burial will be at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge where V.F.W. Post 1856 will accord military honors.
