Howard "Joe" Edward Vorwald was born the son of Henry and Catherine (Klein) Vorwald on March 19, 1920 in Dyersville Iowa. He passed away Saturday, July 28, 2007, at the Guttenberg Care Center at the age of 87. Joe graduated high school and spent 30 years working for the Lock and Dam 10 in Guttenberg. He also spent four years serving in the U.S. Army where he spent 18 months in the Philippines during WWII. On November 7, 1945 he was united in marriage with Margaret Meyer at St. Marys Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Together they were blessed with 8 children. Joe was the founder of the Wooden Chain Society and he was passionate about being involved with the American Legion. He enjoyed wood carving especially mushrooms and chains. He also always had time to visit and was a great storyteller. Joe will be missed by his six children, Mary (Harley) Anderegg, of Guttenberg, Carolyn Smith of Cedar Rapids, Peggy (Gary) Hefel of Rockford, Ill. Joe Vorwald, Rose Eglseder and Jennifer (Brian) DeCook all of Guttenberg; one brother, Eldon "Mike" (Eunice) Vorwald of Guttenberg, thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two sons James and John.Visitation: Tuesday 4:00 - 8:00 P.M.
