Jack Thein

Obituary John (Jack) Thein, 75, of Guttenberg died on Sunday, Sept. 5, following a fatal motorcycle/kayak accident, through no fault of his own, near Rossville in Allamakee County. Jack was born to Walter and Helen (Leibold) Thein, Garber, on May 26, 1946 in Guttenberg. Jack was the youngest of four children. On June 18, 1966 he was united in marriage with Jane Smith in the brides home, rural Colesburg. They were blessed with two sons, Troy and Cory. They later divorced. Jack loved his family dearly, especially his sons and his only granddaughter, Peyton. After working 30 years at Dubuque John Deere Tractor works he had more time for his many hobbies; making Fine Thein Wine, attending auctions where hed buy just about anything to add to his many collections, whether they were in good or tough shape, hed restore them to perfection. Riding one of his Harleys was Jacks lifes joy. Jack rode his Harley all over the United States, making life-long friends along the way. He rode many times to the annual Sturgis, S.D. event. Jack was often seen at motorcycle swap meets buying treasures he needed or would need to repair a motorcycle, whether his own, or one of his friends. Jack would go out of his way to help a friend or a total stranger. Many knew him by his nickname, Crud, appropriately so, because he had to always have himself as well as his Harleys, cars or trucks spotless. He had several classic vehicles in his lifetime; Jack was a Classic himself. Crud was a great storyteller and jokester. He kept the Guttenberg Library busy when he was laid up, or in the winter when he wasnt on his Harley. Well, sometimes he was! Most of all, Jack truely enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. Left to cherish his life are his sons, Troy Thein (fiance Gina Judkins), Cedar Rapids; Cory (Casey) Thein and granddaughter Peyton, Asbury; his sister Joanne (and Ben) Durley, Georgia; brother Jim Thein, Oelwein; brother Jerry (Phyllis) Thein, North Carolina; nieces Debra Recker, Jaime Stewart, Julie Hersom Hall, Tracy, Jodi Kartman; nephews Steve Thein, Jon McEvoy, Tim Hersom, Warren Hersom, Stan Hersom. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Helen Thein and sister-in-law Mary Ellen Thein.
