Joyce Amelia Backes

Obituary Joyce Amelia Backes, age 82, of Garnavillo, IA, died Wednesday, August 21, 2019, at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born on February 23, 1937 on the home farm near National, the daughter of Augusta and Zala (Palmer) Werger. Joyce graduated from the Garnavillo High School and worked many years in the food service industry. She spent many years working at the Kountry Manor and White Springs in McGregor. On April 17, 1956 Joyce was united in marriage with Royce Backes in Farmersburg and this union blessed them with 3 sons. Joyce taught Sunday School at St. Peters Church for many years and enjoyed taking trips to the Casino Queen in Marquette. Joyce also enjoyed playing cards and other games including Bingo and spending time with family friends. Joyce will be forever loved and cherished by her 3 sons, Jerry Backes of Garnavillo, Randy (Sandy) Backes of Edgewood & Ricky Backes of Garnavillo; 4 grandchildren, Heather, Jessica, Kalen & Brittney; 5 great grandchildren, Dacotah, Aiden, Jaxon, Rohman & Braxton; 2 sisters Jan (Carroll) Oleson & Jeanette Dryer and many other relatives and friends.
