Obituary Joyce Ellen Cherne, age 73, of Guttenberg, IA, died Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at home surrounded by her family. She was born on December 29, 1946 in Washington IA, the daughter of Leonard and Rosella (Sieren) Bayliss. Joyce graduated from Keota High School and obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Iowa State University. On June 3, 1972, Joyce was united in marriage with Vernon Cherne at St. Marys Catholic Church in Guttenberg and this union blessed the couple with 4 children. Joyce was active in 4-H activities since she was a youth in her hometown of Keota. Joyce was a counselor at the State 4-H Leadership Camp, Iowa State Fair and a member of the Iowa State Collegiate 4-H Club. She served as a leader for the Jolly Janes 4-H Club. She enjoyed working with the members and judging multiple achievement shows and county fairs. In 2015, Joyce & Vernon were inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. She taught religious education classes for St. Marys for many years. Joyce taught Family and Consumer Science at Clayton Ridge Schools for 40 years. In 2005 she was named the Iowa Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year and the Iowa Association for Career and Technical Education Teacher of the year. Joyce will be forever loved and cherished by her 4 children, Eric (Jennifer) Cherne, Julie (Nick) Hansel, Amy (Andrew) Phelps & Scott (Sarah) Cherne; 9 grandchildren, Mariah, Lauren, Brooke, Reid, Cade, Grant, Lane, Ayden, and one granddaughter to arrive in May. Six siblings, Richard (Cyndy) Bayliss, Tom Bayliss, Donald (Renita) Bayliss, Gary (Joen) Bayliss, Janet (Paul) Jacobs, Carol (Chris) Jacobsen; brother in law, David Hasenmiller. Judy (Howard) Hafner, Beth (Patsy), Alice (Darrell) Baumgartner, Diana (Fred) Kirby, Kay, Mike (Nancy), and Pat Cherne. Many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Joyce was also honored to have Denver Nicholson in her life as a stem cell donor in 2013. This provided Joyce and the family with an additional seven years of life together. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband Vernon in September 2016 & sister Rosemary Hasenmiller. In Lieu of flowers and all other styles of sympathy the family has requested memorials to benefit either Clayton County 4-H or Dollars for Scholars.
