Lavern John Staebler

Lavern John Staebler, 81, of Guttenberg, Iowa passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, in the Guttenberg Care Center on Sunday, July 8, 2012. He struggled through a long battle of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). He was born on January 21, 1931, in rural Colesburg, Iowa to John & Louise (Schultz) Staebler. He attended the Friedlein Country School through the 8th grade. After finishing school, he farmed with his parents on the farm. He later received his G.E.D. In 1953, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served for 2 years, including time overseas in Verdun, France. On April, 18, 1953, Lavern married Phyllis (Oldham) in Manhattan, Kansas and from this union came five children. After his military service, he and Phyllis farmed for the next 18 years. After his farming years, he became involved in various agriculture product sales. The most recent company was with All-Star Feeds in Dyersville, Iowa where he loved his work and the people he worked with. Nothing made him happier than to jump in his truck and take a load of products to his customers. He loved visiting and making friends with his customers. Laverns favorite past-times have always been grilling, picnics and spending time celebrating his familys special occasions. Surviving are his wife Phyllis of 59 years, one son, Steven (Jane) of Guttenberg, four daughters, Linda (Jeff)Evers of DeWitt, Iowa, Patricia (Brent) Reynolds of Pinellas Park, Florida, Von Randall (Steve Slade) of Guttenberg, and Sue (Tim) Oberbroeckling of Dyersville. They have 12 grandchildren, Stephanie, Nick, & Brandon Evers, Tiffany (Caleb) Sumpter; Billy (Heather) Winslow, Lyndsey Winslow; Docker, Jasmine, Jaderial Staebler and Travis, Jordyn, and Matthew Oberbroeckling, four great-grandchildren; Parker & Hudson Winslow, DMonte Winslow and Alex Sumpter; motherin-law Blanche Kruse of Guttenberg and two sisters-in-law, Una Bishop of Guttenberg and Dolores Oldham. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers-in-law, Robert Bishop and Delbert Oldham, and 1 son-in-law, Jim Randall.Memorial Service: Saturday 10:00 A.M. July 14, 2012 at St. John's Lutheran Church Guttenberg, IowaVisitation: Friday 4:00 - 7:00 P.M.
