HOLY CROSS, IOWA Leon G. Maiers, 92, of Dubuque and formerly of Holy Cross died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at 4:20 a.m., surrounded by his loving family at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque. Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross where a parish vigil service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue to call after 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Noah Diehm will officiate. Leon was born September 11, 1924, in Holy Cross, the eldest child of Gilbert and Henrietta (Lake) Maiers. He attended school at Holy Cross Schools and finished high school at Loras Academy in Dubuque with the Class of 1942. He married Harriet Wegmann on May 4, 1949, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg. He spent a few years doing carpentry and then they farmed near Holy Cross until retirement in 1990. Leon was an active, office holding member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 881, and the Knights of Columbus Council 2001 of Farley. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing with the grandchildren, puzzles, traveling, and serving others. He was known for his kindness, helpfulness and honesty. Surviving are: 5 daughters: Mary (Sam) Bran of Solon, IA, Rose (Ed) Bracken of Iowa City, IA, Jan (Doug) Brimeyer of Jackson, WY, Carol (John) Eubank of Urbandale, IA and Jean (Mark) Gaul of Farley, IA; 14 grandchildren: Jacob and Sarah Bran, Adam, Eric and Katie Bracken, Kyle and Ashley Brimeyer, Luke, Josh, Matthew and Megan Eubank, Austin, Brady and Carter Gaul; siblings: Eddie Maiers, Clete (Shirley) and Al “Butch” (Pat) Maiers, all of Dubuque, Eileen Kluesner of Farley, Norma Maiers of Dyersville; in-laws Ralph (Leona) Wegmann of Farley, Ambrose “Butch” Wegmann of Delhi, LuAnn (Bob) Mescher of Edgewood. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Harriet on Jan. 11, 2015, his brother, Wilmer Maiers, and in-laws: Jerry Kluesner. Laura Maiers, Armella (Larry) Weiferich, Dorothy (Art Esch and Emmett Pfeiler), John (Vickie) Wegmann, Alvin (Sally Langel and Patricia Jacobson Hendricks) Wegmann, Eileen (Jack) Meder and Patricia Wegmann.
