Lola Smith

Lola G. Smith, 90, of Guttenberg, formerly of Colesburg, died peacefully in Gods hands on Friday, Oct. 15. 2004, at the Guttenberg Care Center following a long courageous battle with Alzheimers. Lola was born on Feb. 1, 1914, daughter of Luther P. and Alta (Gore) ONeal. She graduated from Colesburg High School in 1932 and then earned her teachers certificate and taught at Colesburg elementary school 2 years. She married Roy H. Smith on Sept. 14, 1934 at the Chicagos World Fair. They made their living on their dairy farm near Colesburg before retiring in Guttenberg in 1989. Lola was a devoted farmwife and mother of four children. She loved to cook and took pleasure in flower gardening, attending dances with friends and spending time with family. In retirement years they spent winters in Florida and traveled in their motor home to many other states. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Womens Farm Bureau and Colesburg Garden Club. She played the piano beautifully and had an extensive collection of bells. She loved cats and dogs, but most of all, she loved being with her children and grandchildren. Surviving are two daughters, Jane M. Thein of Guttenberg, Mrs. Ron (Naida) "Cookie" Combs of Garber; one son, Allen (Barb) Smith of Solon; a nephew whom they raised, Curtis G. (Mary) Smith of Mt. Vernon; and a son-in-law, Beuford Barnhart of Guttenberg; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years in 1991; a daughter, Arlyss (Beuford) Barnhart in 1996; and her parents and sister, Lela Livingston and brother, Russell ONeal. Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Eric Barnhart, Alecia (Barnhart) Grove, Troy Thein, Cory Thein, Mike Smith, Dean Smith, Chad Smith, Jason Combs, Nadine (Combs) Hansel and Michelle (Combs) Carithers.Visitation: 3-7 PM , Sunday October 17, 2004 at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, Ia.Funeral Service: 10 AM, Monday October 18, 2004 at United Methodist Church, Guttenberg, IowaInterment: Oak Hill Cemetery, Colesburg, Iowa Service Information A service summary is not available
