Loraine "Larry" Frederick Horstman, 82, passed away Friday September 16, 2005 at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, following an extended illness. Loraine was born May 3, 1923, to Wilbert and Ottilie (Roeben) Horstman, in Elkader IA. He graduated from the Guttenberg High School in 1941. From 1942 to 1945, Loraine served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radio and Morse Code operator in the Pacific theater. He was among the many young men and women who wrote letters to the Guttenberg press describing their WWII experiences. On January 11, 1946, Loraine married Lela June Nelson at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elkader, IA. From 1946-1967 Loraine and June owned and operated Horstmans Grill and "66" Service in Guttenberg. In 1969 Loraine joined United Laboratories of Addison, Illinois, as an account executive. He enjoyed working with his customers, made many life-long friends and won numerous sales awards. He retired in 2000, after 31 years with United. Loraine was a 60 year member of the American Legion, a past member of the Dubuque Kennel Club, and a life-long member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and on various church committees. At home, Loraine enjoyed his family and caring for his German Shepherds. He liked quiet hours in the backyard, doing yard work and watching the seasons pass. He especially appreciated the autumn colors and waiting for the first snowfall. Loraine also enjoyed traveling, both in the U.S. and abroad. Among his favorite places were Colorado and the Pacific Northwest. Loraine is survived by his wife, Lela June of Guttenberg; three daughters, Connie Horstman of Seattle WA, Cathy Spicer of Seattle and Cindy Horstman of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Evelyn Moser of Rock Island IL; and his German Shepherd, Max; one brother in law Edward Lundt of Rockford IL, and many nieces and nephews and friends He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Elmer and Eugene; and one sister IvanelleVisitation: 4:00-8:00 P.M.
