Margaret Catherine (Thein) Schmelzer age 97, of Guttenberg, IA, died Thursday, December 27, 2007, at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born the daughter of George and Selma (Winch) Thein on May 29, 1910 on the home farm near Elkport. Maggie graduated from the Elkport High School and was a homemaker for many years. On September 16, 1928, she was united in marriage with Otto Schmelzer at St. Catherines Church in Dubuque. Together they farmed near Littleport and later owned and operated a tavern. Maggie spent much her of life working but she would use her free time crocheting and spending it with family. Survivors include; one daughter, Patricia (Franklin) Wacker of Elkader; 16 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; two sisters in law, Dorothy Schmelzer of Dubuque, Nan Cambern of Wilcox Arizona and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Otto, parents; four sons, Keith, Roland, Robert and Donald; two grandchildren, Pamela and Terry Schmelzer; one sister, Minnie Radloff; five brothers, Ivan, Earl, Lorraine, Walter and Ernest Thein.Visitation: Monday 10:00-11:00 A.M.
