Mary Ellen Rome was born on November 13, 1923 in Hibbing, Minnesota to Clarence and Hazel (Cain) Steichen. She graduated from Hibbing High School, Hibbing, MN. She was joined in marriage to Elmer Rome on July 5, 1946 in Keewatin, MN. She and Elmer lived in Guttenberg, IA from 1957 to 1986. They enjoyed their retirement years in Arizona and Minnesota. Mary Ellen was a fulltime mother and homemaker. As part of the "Greatest Generation" she contributed to the WWII effort by building transport planes. She was always proud of her "Rosie the Riveter" legacy. Mary Ellen died peacefully on August 24, 2006 surrounded by her family. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the love and joy of her life. Mary Ellens faith was the center of her life. Her faith sustained her as she lived it. She was a true Christian example to all whose lives she touched. She was a major benefactor to several charities including the Guttenberg Library, St Marys Church, Divine Word Seminary and St. Josephs Indian School. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Elmer; children: Barbara (Dick) Schoenauer of Dubuque, IA, daughter-in-law Jean Rome of Lincolnton, NC, Kathy (Paul) Krieg of Colesburg, IA, Mary Ann (Doug) Osborne of Ham Lake, MN, Patrick (Maurna) Rome of Mora, MN, Michael Rome of Hopkins, MN, John (Shelly) Rome of Mesa, AZ, Jayne (Colin) Schultz of Hampton, MN, Brian (Tegwin) Rome of Chanhassen, MN and TJ (Michele) Rome of Rosemount, MN.; grandchildren, Steven (Lori) Schoenauer, Lisa (Greg) Rossmiller, Tiffany, Shannon, and Amy Rome, Jennifer (Brad) McClimon, Chris (Susan) Krieg, Kristy (Tuck) Foree, Joseph Osborne, Alex, Ben and Molly Rome, Maggie & Annie Rome, Tony, Emma & Elle Schultz, Abigail, Noah, Caleb, Olivia and Sophia Rome, and Andrew & Caitlin Rome; great-grandchildren: Hunter & Cade Schoenauer, Grace, Ally & Sienna Rossmiller, and Madeline Foree; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Steichen and Caryl Snell; niece & nephew, Trisha Steichen and Bob (Judy) Steichen plus many other relatives and friends. Mary Ellen was greeted at heavens gate by her parents - Clarence & Hazel Steichen; her son, Roy Rome; her granddaughter, Heather Rome; her great granddaughter, Addison Krieg; and her brother, Joseph SteichenIn remembrance of Mary Ellens generous nature, memorials may be given to The Guttenberg Public Library, or St. Marys Church, Guttenberg, IA.Visitation: Sunday 3:00-7:00 P.M.
