Michael William Simon

Michael (Mike) W. Simon, 92, of Millville, Iowa, died Monday July 7, 2014, at the Guttenberg Care Center. He was born on February 11, 1922, in Farley, IA, the son of Michael F. and Beatrice (McElmeel) Simon. Mike was raised and educated in the Farley area. Mike served honorably in the U.S. Navy from August 1942 till December 1945, on board the destroyer ship USS Hobby. On July 9, 1946, Mike was united in marriage to Lorraine A. Theisen at St. Aloysius Church, South Garryowen, IA. He worked on the Great Western Railroad, Dubuque Packing House, John Deere Co., hauling milk, cemetery sexton. His great love was raising his fifteen sons and daughters on the farm at Millville, IA for the past 59 years. Mike was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church, VFW and the Eagles Club Aeries 4114. Mike enjoyed hunting, playing cards, feeding the birds, gardening, making soup, scraping metal, visiting with neighbors, friends, relatives and he was an avid Cardinal Baseball Fan. He is survived by his fourteen children, Judy Ellingson of Manchester, Sharon (Joe) Walters of Colesburg, Carol Geokan of Hollywood, FL, Michael (Donna) Simon of Guttenberg, Patricia Salazar, FL, Linda (Jerry) Schroeder of Dubuque, Marion (Forrest) Finnegan of Colesburg, Joan Simon of Guttenberg, Patrick Simon of Quincy, IL., Jerry (Ginger) Simon of Corydon, IN., Sue (Ronald) Bolsinger of Colesburg, Dennis (fianc Karen) Simon of Guttenberg, Colleen (fianc Darrell) Schneider of Austin, TX, Daniel Simon of Bettendorf; 30 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; one sister Margaret Roling of Rockford, IL. Mike was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine; daughter, Nancy; grandson, David; parents; five brothers, Nick, Paul, John, Richard and Frank; son in law, Lowell Ellingson.In Lieu of flowers and all types of sympathy the family has requested that memorial be given to a charity of your choice.Visitation: Sunday 2:00 - 7:00 P.M.
