Richard 'Rich' Grave

Obituary Richard "Rich" Eldon Grave, age 86, of Garnavillo, IA was called home Friday, November 29, 2019 at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg, IA. Rich was born on February 16, 1933 to John and Lena (Zacharias) Grave in Bradford, IA. He received his education, like many, attending country school in Humboldt, SD and graduated in 1950. In 1953, Rich was called to serve his country in the United States Army for two years in Germany and was discharged in 1955. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work from Wartburg College in 1959. On June 24, 1961, he married the love of his life, Diane Mary Bierbaum. They were wed at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, IA and to this union three children were born. Rich spent the majority of his life working the land that he loved; raising crops and milking cows. Rich used his love of farming to teach his children about life and family. After retiring from farming, he worked for G&G Services in Guttenberg, IA from 1992-2008. When he was not working, he enjoyed spending time with his family, attending bible study, working on crossword puzzles, playing card games and trying his hand at woodworking. One of his favorite pastimes was singing in and being a member of the Keystone Barbershop Harmony Society in Elkader, IA. Rich also had the opportunity to go on the Honor Flight and visit Washington D.C. in 2018. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 58 years, Diane; two daughters, Kathy (Brian) Plogman, and Kari (Jeff) Friedlein; one son, Jason (Lori) Grave; four grandchildren, Ashley (Tim) Morarend, Brandon (Margo) Friedlein, Taylor (Nick) Chase and Austin Plogman; three great-grandchildren Levi and Maisyn Chase and Easton Morarend; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Rich is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Roger and Ron Grave, and one grandchild, Derek Friedlein.
