Robert Berns, age 79, of Garnavillo, IA, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader, IA. He was born the son of Arthur and Evelyn (Zapf) Berns on May 26, 1931, in Garnavillo. Robert received his education from the St. Joseph School in Garnavillo and spent much of his life farming. On October 16, 1951, he was united in marriage with Angeline Schmelzer at St. Joseph Church in Garnavillo. Robert served his country proudly during the Korean War and received the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He received his honorable discharge on November 25, 1953. Robert was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and farming. Robert had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and joke with his friends and family. He is survived by his wife Angeline Berns; one brother, Joseph Hildebrend and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Adele Nieland and one brother Gerald Berns.Visitation: Sunday 3:00 - 6:00 P.M.
