Royce Backes

Royce Backes, age 80, of Garnavillo, IA, died Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg, IA. He was born on October 4, 1933, on the family farm north of Garnavillo to Ervin and Alvina (Nieman) Backes. Royce grew up on the family farm outside of Garnavillo where he also attended the local country school. He later graduated from the Garnavillo High School in 1951. After school he served his country proudly during the Korean War in the United States Army. After his discharge, Royce was married to Joyce Werger on April 17, 1956 in Farmersburg IA. They were later blessed with three sons. Royce was a long time member of the American Legion, served on the St. Peters church council, Elkader COOP board of directors. He enjoyed a lifetime of farming, fishing and spending time in the woods. Royce is survived by his wife of 58 years Joyce; sons, Jerry Backes of Garnavillo, Randy (Sandy) Backes of Edgewood, Ricky (Special friend Karen Meyer) Backes of Garnavillo; four grandchildren, Heather, Jessica, Kalen, Brittney; five great grandchildren, Dacotah, Aiden, Jaxon, Rohman and Braxton; one sister, Shirley (John) Pake of Wonewoc Wis and many other relatives and friends. Royce was preceded in death by his parents, great granddaughter, Angel and one sister Arleta Hardt.In Lieu of flowers memorials are preferred and they may be sent to P.O.
