Shirley Arlene (Schabacker) Degnan was born the daughter of George and Mabel (Aschenbrenner) Schabacker on March 20, 1924 in Ashton Illinois. She died Sunday, October 2, 2005, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. IA Shirley graduated from Wartburg and Upper Iowa and taught elementary for 34 years; 29 of those were in Guttenberg. On September 2, 1950 Shirley was united in marriage with Irish Degnan in Des Moines. Some of her important events in life was, receiving her B.A. degree and doing what she loved; which was teaching. Shirley was a member of American Legion, St. John's Lutheran Church and the Hospital Auxiliary. In her free time she enjoyed; reading, crossword puzzles, being outside gardening and working with her flowers, knitting, watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Iowa sports and CNN. Shirley also made sure she kept up with world events with literature and watching the major news networks. Shirley also volunteered at the Public Library. Shirley will be sadly missed by her husband Irish; two daughters, Peggy Degnan of Dubuque, IA and Jann Degnan of Brooklyn NY; one brother Harlan Schabacker of Paradise Valley AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Paul Schabacker.Visitation: 4:00-8:00 P.M.
