Raymond Herman Handke, Sr., age 88, of Guttenberg, IA, died Monday, June 30, 2014, at the Guttenberg Care Center. He was born one of twelve children to Edgar and Augusta (Block) Handke on July 14, 1925 in his grandmothers home in Guttenberg. Ray grew up on a farm on Miners Creek Road. As a boy he helped with milking cows, plowing and all the farm chores. He received his education from a rock school which was known and the Miners Creek School. On December 29 1957, Raymond was united in marriage with Josephine Hansel at the Methodist Church in Guttenberg. They were blessed with two sons, Ray Jr. and Bruce. Ray worked several different jobs: the Egg Plant, Farley Lumber Yard, Hilton Homes and Trademark Homes. Ray and Josephine enjoyed walking on the dike by the river, often stopping to sit on a bench to enjoy the view. His time at the care center was filled with watching TV, reading, exercising on the NuStep and joking around with the staff. Ray is survived by his two sons, Raymond (Bonnie) Handke Jr. and Bruce Handke both of Guttenberg; four siblings, Eugene Handke, Arlene Thein, Augusta Gloeckner, Mary Ann Hoeger and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Josephine, siblings, Roland, Clarence, Lavern, Edgar Handke Jr; Bernice Purman, Edna Hansel and Florence Duwe.Visitation: Wednesday 4:00 - 7:00 P.M.
