Thelma Blumer

Thelma Anne (Powell) Blumer, age 78, of Prairie Du Chien, Wis., formerly of Luana Iowa, died Sunday, September 9, 2012, at Prairie Maison. She was born the daughter of Albert and Joyce (Cowley) Powell on April 5, 1934 in West Row England. Thelma spent much of her youth in Mildenhall England where she was a survivor of WWII and an eyewitness of several bomb raids in her community. After receiving her education she worked various jobs until she met the man she was going to spend the rest of her life with one day while working in the bakery. That man was Donald Blumer who was in England serving his country. On January 18, 1955 they went to the Registers Office in Newmarket England and declared their love for one another true and official. This union later blessed them with five daughters and it was those five daughters that made making a home a full time job for Thelma. One thing that Thelma was very proud of was her official citizenship to the United States of America. People were always amazed and enamored to listen to Thelma speak of her life experiences and her youth in England during one of the most challenging periods this world has delivered. Thelma enjoyed crocheting, sewing and making quilts which can be represented by the quilts that she made for each of her grandchildren. Most of all Thelma loved her family. The husband that wooed her so much that she made that life decision to not only marry him but move all the way across the pond to America. The five daughters she cared for who acknowledge that they were so fortunate to have her not only as their mother but to have her always home to care for them at all times. Always having something freshly baked waiting for them after school or the delicious meals that graced the dinner tables each evening. And finally, all those grandchildren who brought a fresh sight of joy and memories to Thelma which can never be taken away. These are the things in life that matter most to Thelma in which she could consider herself to be a very blessed woman. Thelma is survived by her husband of 57 years, Donald Blumer of Luana; five daughters, Karen (Gary) Gray of Salem Oregon, Becky (Gary) Hampton of Cassville Wis, Susan (Lee) Stence of Charter Oak IA, Julie (Dennis) Zittergruen of Guttenberg and Ellen (Doug) Alvin of Richland Center Wis; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Amber (Alvin) Syroratka, Courtney Mattis & her children Haiden, Paige and Cadence, Matthew (Leann) Mattis & their children, Ava Kate and Asher, Ashley (Andrew Winter) Mattis and their children Amelia and Amarie, Andy and Mindy Hampton, Nicole (Jeremy) Johnson and their children, Isabella and Cole, Jason Bacon, Heidi (ChucK) Ploessl, Joe (Brynn Junk) Alvin and their children Aven and Jonathan, Brittany (Jim) Schultz and their daughter Ellye and Jessica Alvin.
