Violet Schenke

Violet Grace (Ross) Schenke, age 100, of Guttenberg, formerly of Colesburg, IA, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born the daughter of Squire and Ella (VanSickle) Ross on June 23, 1911 in rural Clayton County. Violet attended the rural country school and eventually graduated from the Edgewood High School in 1928. She then furthered her education and received her teaching degree from the Junior College in Elkader. With that degree she taught in several country schools. On her 22nd birthday, Violet was united in marriage with Russell "Jack" Schenke in Elkader. Together they farmed for many years but making a home for her husband and children was also a full time job. In her later years she worked in the lunch program for the Colesburg School system. Violet was a 60 year member of the Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge and a long time member of the Colesburg United Methodist Womens group. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing card games such as Euchre, bridge, pinochle and she was a member of the 500 card club. Most of all her greatest joy in life was her family and she cherished each moment together with them. Violet will be greatly missed by her, one daughter, Carol (Jim) Jacobs and one son, Roger (Carol) Schenke; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1982; one son, Bernard Neil in infancy; 5 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Fannie Rodas, Myrtle Wegman and Nellie Buisman; one brother Robert Ross and one daughter in law, Anne Schenke.In Lieu of flowers and all types of sympathy expressions, memorials would be appreciated to be sent to either the Colesburg United Methoidist Church or the River Living Center in Guttenberg.Visitation: Saturday 10:00 - 11:00 A.M.
